Escalation Protocol

Escalation Protocol is an endgame public activity released in Destiny 2: Warmind. I led a small combatants team consisting of one other designer, one 3D artist, one VFX artist, and one tester to create boss combatants for the activity. I owned the design for multiple generic sub-boss units as well as five unique final boss encounters that must be defeated in a time limit. The given design goals of the final bosses was to create boss encounters with mechanics that were easy to understand but challenging to execute on, and they needed to be created on a very tight schedule. The shipping bosses were:

 

"Eats Allies" Ogre

This Ogre boss periodically enters a consuming state. In this state, the Ogre stops moving and numerous special exploder units spawn on the outskirts of the arena and run towards the boss; if these exploder minions reach the boss they explode, greatly healing the boss. Players must identify when the boss has entered the consuming state and switch priorities to finding and stopping the healing minions before they can reach the boss.

 

"Regenerating Armor" Knight

This Knight boss has a shield of ice encasing it, making it immune. Players must defeat a unique high health minion to acquire a special Hive sword which is the only weapon able to damage the boss' shield. After breaking the ice shield, players have a short window in which they can damage the boss before the shield regenerates.

 

"Shielded Near Allies" Ogre

This Ogre boss has a ring area around it, and the boss is immune if allied Hive are within the ring. Players must change targets and clear enemies that enter the ring while also damaging the boss, or coordinate roles to have players specifically focused on keeping weaker Hive combatants away from the boss.

 

"Weakspot on Back" Ogre

This Ogre boss can only be damaged by shooting a weakspot located on the boss' back. Players must juggle aggro from the boss' suppressive attack and spread out around the boss to consistently damage it enough to defeat it in the time limit.

 

"Super Bonanza" Knight

This Knight boss is a standard generic boss but with extremely high health. Periodically, special high health minions spawn in the boss arena that drop numerous Orbs of Light on death, allowing players to consistently and rapidly regain and use their super ability as long as they stay alive. This fight is meant to be a fun and frantic bonanza of constant super usage for players, and they must work to stay alive through heavy incoming fire while using their supers since their pile of orbs despawns on death.
